Professional Manager magazine, March ’09 (full review): A master-class on the competencies required to achieve effective organisational change.
The book is a manual which will guide a project manager through any form of organisational change. The process is well-structured and clearly expressed. Brief examples drawn from the author’s wide experience of differing organisations are introduced at every stage to clarify the importance of the subject matter. Each chapter concludes with a summary providing a useful aide-memoire and checklist.
A chapter on Preparing for Change easy-to-use survey outlines for assessing the capability of the organisation to adapt and the complexity of the proposed change project. These offer significant insight into where focus should be placed so that the anticipated benefits of change are realised.
Leading successful change is probably the most important and demanding competence in a manager’s role. This work provides an outstanding guide to managers charged with securing organisational change in today’s volatile business environment. Reviewed by Andrew May FCMI see www.managers.org.uk

Personnel Today magazine (19 February 2009) : Greenfield writes in a very open style, so this book would be equally helpful to the business and non-business person. He is a great advocate of the case study as illustration, and uses a variety, from Jamie Oliver and the turkey twizzler, to his own experiences while working at Sainsbury’s. The summary at the end of each of the chapter provides a useful reminder of key points, while clever use of tables and graphs helps clarify the trickier concepts. See www.personneltoday.com
Quality World magazine (January19 February 2009), ‘Five of the Best Leading Business Books’ (souce: Best-selling leading business books from www.amazon.co.uk): No.2: The Five Forces of Change: a blueprint for leading successful change Anthony Greenfield.
Shaun Matisonn, CEO PruHealth See www.pruhelath.co.uk: A great book. I enjoyed reading it and learnt a lot. Unlike other business books I read every page as I didn’t want to miss anything. There is a lot we at PruHealth can learn from this.
Prof Colin Carnall, CEO of Executive Development , Cass Business School: Well presented and very readable. The concepts and frameworks used are relevant and helpful and I particularly like the way Dr Greenfield builds them up to into a diagnostic framework at the end of the book. see www.cass.city.ac.uk
Neil Franklin, Facilities & Operations Manager – Software Corporation, Europe: I really can’t express just how much I have enjoyed the book and how relevant and in-touch it really is. I couldn’t put the book down. As I read your book, I was haunted by specific examples of where projects had failed in the past and I had many “light-bulb” moments that in hindsight, I just didn’t feel well-enough equipped to protest. That has now changed, it is great to have a book which doesn’t just tell you what to do, it equips you with the tools to get it done.
Sharon Collier, Head of People Development, Somerfield: There are excellent examples throughout, historic, modern, aspirational and realistic. The language is very user-friendly and I love the tools and techniques. see www.co-operative.coop
Humphrey Claxton, former MD of BNFL Engineering Ltd: A terrific book and everything it says resonates with my experience, there is nothing with which I disagree. I love the difficulty and adaptability questionnaires.
Tony Thwaites, Chairman, Eveden Group: Many management books are either too esoteric or treat the reader as an idiot! However, this book is highly readable and extremely practical. What I liked most was learning from the successes and failures of other organisations.
Peter Smith, Chairman of South Yorkshire Probationary Area: Contains a potent mix of hard experience, academic research and penetrating analysis. It provides the key to unlocking organisational change.
Mark Ashton, Managing Partner, Resolve: A great reference for any leader who wants to liberate people’s capacity to transform organisational performance.
Andrew Stevens, Head of Talent Development, The Northern Trust Company: This book has a real practical edge as well as well as shedding new light on the why people so often struggle with change.
Nick Hall, Chief Executive, Angel Mining Plc: An essential reference and guide for any manager embarking on change. I will get all of my team to read it.
